DONOVAN Cecil is an instructor with Heroes Unite as their art and calligraphy teacher for the Eastern Arts After School Enrichment Program.
Over the course of teaching he's watched his students become inspired by different art forms and gain confidence in themselves and their ideas,
proving that bringing together his interests and talents benefits others.
"Calligraphy is usually a very introspective process for me, very different than doing outdoor environmental art. To create something that
incorporates safety, functionality and beauty on such a large scale for a community garden was a daunting and unfamiliar task.
I realized that in order to accomplish my goal, I needed to relinquish my limited thinking and be confident that I would enjoy the process enough
to create something wonderful, from my heart.
I conquered my fears by focusing on helping others, a positive attitude shift that reignited my spirit as an instructor and reminded me
of my debt to my own teachers. The whole process was uplifting...everyone should volunteer—it feels great!"
